Former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price wrote two checks totaling $7,502.66 to reimburse the federal government for travel costs, The Hill reported Friday, noting the information had been previously unreported.
The checks were dated Sept. 28, the day before he resigned, and were meant to reimburse the government for the cost of flights by his wife, Betty, who accompanied him on trips to Asia, Africa and Europe. The Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the expenditure.
Price resigned his position after 10 months as HHS secretary when an investigation revealed his travels on military flights and private jets cost taxpayers more than $1 million. He traveled overseas on official business – trips that were approved by the White House.
Price's travel costs continue to be investigated by the HHS Office of Inspector General and a bipartisan panel of the House Oversight Committee.
