The number of threats of violence against schools has dramatically increased since last week’s Florida bloodbath — with about 50 menacing messages a day being recorded across the nation, a school-safety group says.
That compares to about 10 threats a day on average, according to The Educator's School Safety Network, an Ohio-based group of experts who train staffers, students, parents and emergency responders in emergency safety techniques.
"Our research indicates that the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, is the latest of 81 school-based violent incidents and threats that have occurred in Florida just this school year," the group said in a statement on Thursday.
"Of the 81 threats and incidents that have occurred in Florida this school year, 29 have happened in January and the first half of February alone."
On Feb. 14, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, wielding an AR-15 rifle stormed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and shot and killed 17 people. The violence has put schools across the country on high alert as Congress grapples with calls for tougher gun laws.
