The president of the American Federation of Government Employees said the Supreme Court ruling government workers cannot be forced to contribute to labor unions could mean benefits for government employees might soon disappear.

The 5-4 ruling "jeopardizes union rights and protections for millions of public-sector workers at the state and local levels, and here in the District of Columbia," said J. David Cox Sr., PRNewswire reportedadding the ruling is an attempted "death knell" for public sector unions.

The federation backed the position that public-sector unions could collect "fair-share fees" from workers who were not union members because those workers benefited from contracts that unions negotiated, PRNewswire noted.

AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka also criticized the ruling, posting a video on Twitter stating: "In this case, a bare majority of the court . . . has conceded to the dark web of corporations and wealthy donors who wish to take away the freedoms of working people."

"We've never depended on any politician or judge to decide our fate, and we aren't about to start now."
