The White House is considering an executive order that calls for a review of welfare programs for the poor, Politico reported Monday.
The draft order was circulated last week but has been under discussion since spring, unnamed Trump administration officials told the outlet.
According to Politico, the draft order calls on agencies to review existing regulations and propose new rules — including tighter work requirements to encourage recipients to shift back into the labor force.
It also aims to streamline or ax duplicative services, sets up ways to evaluate program performance — and encourages more cooperation with state and local governments.
Administration officials hope President Donald Trump signs the order before Thanksgiving, but one unnamed source told Politico the draft hasn't gone through a vetting process established by chief of staff John Kelly.
The last major welfare reform came in 1996, under former President Bill Clinton.
The president's fiscal year 2018 budget proposal has called for cuts to food stamps, Social Security disability insurance benefits and the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program, Politico noted.
