The investigation into possible ties between President Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia is showing "convergence, not coincidence," Rep. Eric Swalwell said Tuesday.
"I think what we're seeing is, as the interference campaign is going on, individuals are going over to Russia, like Carter Page. Roger Stone is intimating that an attack is going to happen against John Podesta's emails," Swalwell, a Democrat on the House Intelligence committee told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program. "I think this is convergence, not coincidence."
"We've long been concerned about the dots that are connecting Donald Trump and his deep, personal, political, and financial ties with Russia and now I think we are starting to see a convergence with the Russian interference campaign.
"The [FBI] Director [James Comey] confirmed that saying there is an investigation, there are U.S. persons investigated and they include members of the campaign," Swalwell added.
Republicans are focusing on leaks coming out of their campaign, when the real issue is that the president and his team are being investigated, Swalwell said.
"To talk about the leaks while he's (Comey) saying that the president of the United States and his team are being investigated, another country attacked us with this interference campaign, that was just over their head. I think they are missing an opportunity for us to unite around this and move forward," he continued.
"Now the president's credibility on anything Russia is devastated. So anything he says going forward, the American people are not going to believe."
"Morning Joe" panelist Mark Halperin asked Swalwell if the majority of the House, both Republican and Democrat, is willing to further look into Russia ties.
"I hope yesterday was a wakeup call that this is real, and they can't bury their head in the sand and hope it's going away. It's not going away. The president is making it worse for them by constantly tweeting about it," he said.
