A super PAC backing Senate candidate Doug Jones in Alabama is controlled by a powerful pair of groups aligned with the national Democratic Party — even as Jones has tried to distance himself from Beltway interests, Politico reported.
Highway 31, which spent more than $4.1 million in support of Jones ahead of Tuesday's special election, is a joint project of two of the largest national Democratic super PACs — Senate Majority PAC and Priorities USA Action — along with a group of Alabama Democrats, Politico reported, citing unnamed sources.
Politico reported that in campaign ads, Jones has vowed he will not answer to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., but some of Schumer's former aides now help run Senate Majority PAC.
President Donald Trump and his allies have tried tying Jones to Schumer and other Democratic figures.
The group, based in Birmingham and named for the road that cuts through the middle of Alabama, has spent more than $2.1 million in December alone, according to Federal Election Commission reports, according to Politico.
According to Politico, the group is the largest outside spender in the race, outpacing the pro-Trump super PAC America First Action, which has spent more than $1 million on behalf of GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore's this month.
