Doug Jones, the Democratic senator-elect in Alabama, has hired Dana Gresham, an African-American former transportation official, as his chief of staff, Politico reported.
With the Gresham hiring, Jones will become the only Senate Democrat to have an African-American chief of staff. Two Republicans in the Senate, Sens. Tim Scott, R-S.C., and Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., have black chiefs of staff, Politico reported.
Gresham has been a Department of Transportation assistant secretary for government affairs, as well as chief of staff for former Alabama Rep. Artur Davis. Gresham is an Alabama native and a graduate of Georgetown University, the report said.
The incoming senator has prioritized the hiring of a diverse staff after his Dec. 12 win over Republican Roy Moore in a special election, Politico reported.
Rep. Terri Sewell, D-Ala., praised the hiring of Gresham in a tweet.
Jones commented on his goals in the Senate during a Wall Street Journal interview. "I’m starting fresh… I want to do that not only across the aisle, but within my own party. We’ve still got divergent views even within the party. I want to be that voice to try to bring people together," Jones told the newspaper.
