President Donald Trump's assertions of voter fraud in the 2016 election contradict his own lawyers' legal filings.

According to the Washington Post, a Trump campaign filing after former Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein requested a recount in Michigan stated "all available evidences suggests that the 2016 general election was not tainted by fraud or mistake."

A separate filing in Pennsylvania, where Stein also challenged the election, came to the same conclusion, though it only referred to voting in that state.

"On what basis does Stein seek to disenfranchise the voters of the Keystone state?" it asked. "None really. There is no evidence — or even any allegation — that any tampering with Pennsylvania's voting systems actually occurred," the filing stated.

In answer to a question Wednesday from Fox News reporter John Roberts on how the recount filings could "square" with Trump's call for a "major investigation" into voter fraud, White House press secretary Sean Spicer suggested the Trump lawyers weren't referring to every state.

"Well, I think there were a lot of states we didn't compete in where that is not necessarily the case," he said, Business Insider reported

"You look at California and New York, I'm not sure that those statements were . . . we didn't look at those two states in particular," Spicer said, adding the probe will look into "bigger states."
