President Donald Trump on Saturday praised the country's economic gains and job growth seen since taking office.
"Unemployment is down to 4.1%, lowest in 17 years. 1.5 million new jobs created since I took office. Highest stock Market ever, up $5.4 trill," the president tweeted.
Numbers released on Friday by the Labor Department's employment report showed nonfarm payrolls increased by 261,000 in October, marking the largest gain since July 2016, although the numbers were below economists' expectations.
Gains in employment in the report were countered by news that the 17-year low unemployment rate of 4.1 percent included 765,000 workers who had dropped out of the labor force. Private payrolls, manufacturing employment and construction payrolls all showed increases while the retail sector slipped, losing 8,300 jobs last month.
As for the stock market, the Dow industrials climbed to a record high on Thursday following the release of the Republicans' tax cut plan.
