President Donald Trump's praise for Australia's universal healthcare system caused Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to break into laughter on MSNBC Friday.

"It's a very good bill right now, the premiums are going to come down very substantially, the deductibles are going to come down," Trump said of the American Health Care Act in a press conference Thursday with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. "It's going to be fantastic health care. Right now, Obamacare is failing.

"I shouldn't say this to our great gentlemen and my friend from Australia, because you have better healthcare than we do."

Australia's healthcare system is run by the federal government, which Sanders quickly pointed out.

"Wait a minute . . . the president has just said it," Sanders said, laughing. "Let's take a look at the Australian healthcare system. And let's move — maybe he wants to take a look at the Canadian system or systems throughout Europe. Thank you, Mr. President.

"Let us move to a Medicare-for-all system that does what every other major country on the earth does — guaranteed healthcare to all people at a fraction of the cost per capita that we spend.

"Thank you Mr. President, we'll quote you on the floor of the Senate," he concluded.

This isn't the first time Trump has praised foreign healthcare systems. During the Republican presidential debates last year, he praised single-payer healthcare abroad, saying it works in Canada, it works incredibly well in Scotland, it could have worked in a different age, which is the age you are talking about here," according to Buzzfeed News.
