Almost half of voters are against a Donald Trump administration plan to roll back vehicle emissions standards, a Politico-Morning Consult poll released Thursday said.
The proposal would freeze rules that required automakers to build more fuel-efficient cars, including hybrids and electric vehicles. The proposal would also roll back a rule that ordered automakers to almost double the fuel economy of vehicles by 2025, the poll report noted.
In the poll:
- 49 percent strongly oppose or somewhat oppose the plan, with 36 percent saying they had strong opposition to it.
- 32 percent strongly support or somewhat support the plan, with 17 percent saying they were somewhat in support of the plan.
- 20 percent said they did not know or had no opinion.
Voters were more split over what they believed would be the effects the plan would have on U.S. consumers.
- 18 percent said the plan would strongly hurt consumers
- 17 percent said the plan would somewhat hurt consumers
- 14 percent said the plan would neither help nor hurt
- 17 percent said the plan would somewhat help
- 15 percent said it would strongly help
- 19 percent did not know or had no opinion
The Trump administration proposed the plan on Aug. 2.
The Politico-Morning Consult poll was conducted from Aug. 2 to Aug. 6, and surveyed 1,994 registered voters, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points, the poll report said.
