There is "nothing constitutional" about the Democrats' push to impeach President Donald Trump because of their claims that he could cheat in the 2020 election, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday.
"I think if you are a Democrat, what you figure is that Trump is going to win, and from their standpoint, that screws up the election," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "So, what do they do so that Trump can't win? Well, if he is in the election, he is going to win. How do they get him out of the election? This is the most bizarrely anti-constitutional gimmick I think I have ever seen."
Last week, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, while the articles of impeachment were being announced against Trump, said it was important to move forward rather than to "just let him cheat in one more election."
"There is zero basis for what they are doing," said Gingrich. "The fact is that there is nothing constitutional about trying to impeach a president because you don't like him, and that's the bottom line here. The Democrats don't like him. Left-wing Democrats hate him. They wake up every morning hating him."
Trump, however, is gaining popularity from the attacks, said Gingrich, and leaders like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are trying to turn the conversation to other topics because Democrats have a "very weak case."
"(They) gave it to Schiff who is a liar and frankly looks sort of like a Soviet-era prosecutor," said Gingrich. "He is not a very believable person. He then went and did it secret and in America, nothing cuts off the public faster than telling them it's going to be in secret. Then they give it to (Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold) Nadler who is just terrible on television."
Trump, meanwhile is succeeding with moving on with business, including with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, a move that is almost like former President Bill Clinton's "playbook," said Gingrich.
