Dems Push for FCC Crackdown on Robocalls

Democrats on a subcommittee that is part of the Senate Commerce Committee introduced a bill that would give the FCC more power to crack down on robocall scammers who target United States citizens.

According to The Hill, Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and the rest of the Democrats on the Communications Subcommittee are backing the Robocall Enforcement Enhancement Act of 2018.

"If there is one thing Americans can agree on, it's that robocalls often cross the line," Schatz said. "With this bill, the FCC will have the time and authority it needs to keep abusive robocalls in check."

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia handed down a ruling last month that softened punishments the FCC can dole out to companies that conduct robocalls. That came on the heels of an FCC vote last summer that resulted in the commission pursuing new rules to help customers who were being inundated by robocalls.
