More than a week after it was reported that an immigration status question may be included on the next census form, Democrats are pushing back.
The question of "Are you a United States Citizen?" will be part of the 2020 census if is approved. According to The Hill, Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats now want to know how the proposed question came about and what input, if any, the White House had in crafting it.
"The census is already underfunded, and the Census Bureau is currently operating without key personnel, including a permanent director," the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore.
"We are concerned that the addition of a citizenship question will depress participation among immigrants and those who live in mixed-status households. And we have serious doubts about the need to add such a question to the census."
The lawmakers then asked several questions, including if anyone at the White House played a role in writing in the immigration status request.
The Census Bureau needs to send its 2020 questions to Congress by March 31. The group of Democrats, which includes Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., asked that Gore respond by March 26.
