Democrats Raise Record $8.4 Million in September

By    |   Friday, 18 October 2013 12:28 PM EDT

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee hauled in a record $8.4 million in September and the group now has $21.6 million in cash, more than double its total from the same date in the prior election cycle.

The DCCC made hay out of the coming government shutdown, which began Oct. 1, and the conflict over the debt ceiling, The Hill reports

“House Republicans’ reckless shutdown hurt the middle class. So our grass-roots supporters and Democratic members stepped up to fight back, leading to a record fundraising month and continuing to give the DCCC the tools we need for 2014," DCCC Chairman Rep. Steve Israel of New York said in a statement.

More than $2 million of the DCCC's bounty came in the six days following Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz's, 21-hour speech blasting Obamacare, a DCCC aide told The Hill.

The National Republican Congressional Committee hasn't announced its September data yet. So far this year through August, it raised $42.6 million, with $12.7 million of cash on hand, Politico reports.
