Democratic presidential hopefuls have been conspicuously silent on the controversy surrounding the NFL national anthem protests, The Hill reported.

Mum's been the word from Sens. Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, The Hill reports.

Sen. Cory Booker on Tuesday attempted to frame the issue without putting a stake in the ground.

"You have to understand these folks are not just taking a knee because they want to disrespect the flag. They're doing this because of real issues in this country," The Hill quoted Booker.

Republicans, meanwhile, have been quite active with their opinions on either side of the controversy spurred and fueled by days of remarks and tweets from President Donald Trump.

But Democrats who hope to take on Trump in 2020? Not a peep.

"Strategic patience is an underrated quality in politics," Democratic consultant David Wade told The Hill. "I think many of the 2020 potential candidates see an unpopular Donald Trump in a head-on collision with some of the world’s most popular athletes and they know that it only benefits Trump if it becomes a mere food fight between politicians. Why jump in prematurely when your opponent is hitting himself?"
