Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., has not been a reliable proponent for repealing Obamacare, said Danny Tarkanian, a businessman and philanthropist who is running as a Republican against Heller.
"When he has seen a political advantage in attacking Obamacare, he has done so; when the tide seems to be running against repeal, he has opposed it and pushed back against calls for repeal," Tarkanian said in an opinion piece Friday in the Washington Examiner.
Tarkanian said that he is running against Heller because the Nevada senator has been "anything but the reliable stalwart" who promised to take on Obamacare.
The philanthropist, in his opinion piece, cited instances where Heller called Obamacare a "colossal monstrosity" in 2013, then in April 2014, said that party leaders were "focusing too much" on it.
Heller was a co-sponsor for the Senate's Obamacare Repeal Act, then Heller announced in June 2017 that he would not support the act, Tarkanian wrote in the Examiner.
"'D.C. Dean" doesn't have any convictions for the positions he holds. He is willing to change them depending on whether or not he thinks it will help him get re-elected. If you don't like his position on an issue, "just wait a few days; it's liable to change," Tarkanian wrote.
"It doesn't matter if you're a Democrat or a Republican or an independent; you can't trust Dean Heller. He needs to be repealed and replaced," he wrote.
On Tuesday, Tarkanian also took aim at Heller in an opinion piece in the Reno Gazette Journal.
