Former Obama adviser David Axelrod on Saturday slammed billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer for incorporating audio of crying illegal immigrant children being separated from their parents in Texas into his "latest ad for his vanity project/impeachment campaign."
"Helping these kids who have been ripped from their parents is completely laudable and important," Axelrod, who also is a CNN commentator, said on Twitter. "Repurposing their pain for your own political project is not."
Steyer, who has mounted an expensive ad campaign to impeach President Donald Trump, used audio recorded by ProPublica in a new 30-second spot introduced nationwide on Thursday.
The ad, a seven-figure buy targeted to both English and Spanish-language television stations, begins with the audio before Steyer says: "Terrible things happen when you leave a lawless president in power."
"Donald Trump is unfit for his office," he continues. "Call Congress now.
"If they won’t stand up to him, they’re just as responsible as he is."
It also includes a picture of a crying 2-year-old girl from Honduras that was featured on this week's cover of Time magazine to slam Trump on his administration's zero tolerance immigration policy.
Steyer has long been at odds with the Democratic Party for his Trump impeachment push, according to news reports.
