Forty-seven percent of likely voters in Virginia's 7th Congressional District favor challenger Abigail Spanberger, a Democrat, compared to 42 percent who back incumbent Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., according to a Monmouth University Poll.

Here is how the poll breaks down.

  • 43 percent view Spanberger, a former CIA officer, favorably, compared to 19 percent who have an unfavorable opinion of her.
  • 35 percent have a favorable opinion of Brat, while 27 percent have an unfavorable view of him.
  • 47 percent of voters in the district approve of the job President Donald Trump is doing in office, compared to 46 percent who do not.

The poll, conducted Sept. 15-24, surveyed 400 people in the district. The margin of error is plus or minus 6.9 percentage points.
