The two hurricanes that have pounded the United States in recent weeks have reportedly forced the postponement of a Senate hearing on what to do about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
An NBC News producer posted this Tweet on Monday afternoon, which seemed to suggest the White House had something to do with the postponement:
The Department of Justice announced last week DACA will be phased out in six months. The program allows people who illegally came to the U.S. as children with their parents to stay under certain conditions.
President Donald Trump has urged lawmakers to write and pass legislation that can serve as a long-term replacement for the policy, which originally was an executive order signed in 2012 by former President Barack Obama.
Hurricane Harvey devastated southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana at the end of August, while Hurricane Irma made landfall on South Florida over the weekend. In Florida alone, nearly 7 million people are without power.
Many federal resources have been deployed to the affected areas. Further, lawmakers from Texas, Louisiana, and Florida have been in their home states helping with cleanup and recovery efforts.
