The Department of Homeland Security has approved more than 170 new applications for the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program since November, according to court documents reviewed by The New York Post.
A DACA recipient or “Dreamer” is a young, undocumented immigrant brought to the United States by their parents in circumstances beyond their control. The Trump administration has fought to end the Obama era program that has protected 600,000-plus so-called DREAMERS from deportation but the Supreme Court over the summer blocked the plan, declaring that DHS hadn’t properly followed federal procedures.
A federal judge in November also blocked new DACA restrictions enacted by Chad Wolf, Trump’s appointed secretary of DHS, saying he was not legally serving in office in July when he implemented the rules.
DHS said of the 2,713 applications submitted, 171 were approved, 121 were denied, and 369 were rejected.
The agency also approved 61,844 renewals, denied 326, and rejected 2,842 during a six-week period starting Nov. 14, 2020.
President-elect Joe Biden has promised to protect DREAMERS and has pitched a plan to provide citizenship to 11 million undocumented people.
