Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., wants a hearing into reports that President Donald Trump conducted personal interviews with candidates for U.S. attorney positions in regions where he had business interests.
Last week, Coons wrote a letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, saying he is concerned Trump is disregarding the "boundaries between politics and the prosecutorial decisions of U.S. attorneys within the Department of Justice," CNN reported on Tuesday.
In October, CNN reported that Trump had met with at least three candidates for U.S. attorney jobs in New York and Washington, D.C., cities where a number of his private companies do business.
Coons also questioned the "sudden" resignation of Dana Boente, the former U.S. Attorney and acting Assistant Attorney General. Sources told CNN Boente had been planning to retire.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said in October that he had discussed with fellow senators about blocking nominees that the president had personally interviewed, according to CNN.
Sen. Coons has been critical of Trump before. On Wednesday, he slammed the president for a "lack of discipline and focus" by picking fights on Twitter.
