Comey: Trump's Claims About Campaign Spy Are 'Made up'

By    |   Friday, 25 May 2018 07:54 AM EDT

Former FBI Director James Comey said President Donald Trump's claims that the FBI spied on his 2016 campaign are not true.

Comey's comments came during a Thursday night interview with late night host Conan O’Brien.

"As best I can tell, it's made up," Comey said. "I don't know where he's getting that from, honestly. I don't find it possible and I know it not to be true."

Trump has suggested the FBI used an informant to spy on his presidential campaign for political purposes, The Hill noted.

And he has claimed that if the FBI did spy on his campaign it would be "bigger than Watergate."

"A number of things he’s announced were the biggest scandals since Watergate. … My guess is two weeks from now it'll be something different than this," Comey said.

Comey was pressed about Trump's motivation for pushing the spy theory.

"I don't know exactly what his thinking is," Comey said. "I know that the attacks on the institutions of justice are just bad, whether you're a Republican or a Democrat. Whatever the motivation is, it's something the president of the United States shouldn't do because it undermines the rule of law."
