People should be cautious of using a survey of political scientists that ranks President Donald Trump as the worst ever as a guideline for Trump's place in history, CNN Politics senior writer and analyst Harry Enten wrote Wednesday.

The survey ranked Trump at the bottom of the list, below James Buchanan, whose actions led to the start of the Civil War.

The scientists in the survey are well-respected, but the survey seems tilted in favor of Democrats, Enten wrote, pointing out that 57 percent of the respondents self-identified as Democrats while only 13 percent said they were Republicans.

Those who took the poll are "current and recent members of the Presidents and Executive Politics Section of the American Political Science Association," a very small sampling of the population, Enten wrote.

Enten also pointed out that political scientists' opinions are not consistent, noting that in a 2014 survey, Ulysses S. Grant was 28th, but is number 21 in the 2018 survey. Andrew Jackson was ninth, and is now 15th.

The ratings of recent presidents are even more subject to change, Enten wrote. Bill Clinton was eighth in the 2014 survey, but has fallen to 13th in the current one.

"The bottom line is we don't know what's going to happen," Enten wrote, pointing out that the Trump administration is just one year old.

"Trump could end up being a disaster in most people's minds by the end of it. He could end surprising some folks," Enten wrote.
