Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, warned he will not tolerate any attacks on the character of Attorney General nominee Jeff Sessions when confirmation hearings open.
"Democratic members of the committee have pledged a fair process. Based on those commitments, I trust the other side will resist what some liberal interest groups are clearly hoping for — an attack on his character," said Grassley, according to the Washington Examiner. "That will not happen here."
Sessions, a Republican senator from Alabama, was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to oversee the Justice Department.
But the Examiner notes three decades earlier, when he was nominated for a federal judgeship, Sessions was accused by Democrats of making racist comments. The website said the nomination was eventually scuttled.
"Sen. Sessions will receive the fair and thorough vetting process he deserves, as have the last four nominees to be Attorney General," Grassley said, noting Sessions is an "honorable man and a person of integrity."
Politico reports Senate Republicans are planning to move quickly on Sessions' nomination and hold hearings before Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20.
