Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Thursday that it would be “ridiculous” for the White House to allow Russia to interview Michael McFaul, a former U.S. ambassador to Russia.
“It sends a chilling message” to other diplomats representing the U.S., Murphy told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Mike McFaul has been a critic of this president, frequently been on television, bringing it to Donald Trump for his weakness in the face of the Russian threat,” Murphy added.
The former ambassador said earlier in July that Trump had damaged NATO more “in 18 months than Soviet and Russian leaders achieved in seven decades.”
McFaul also appeared on “Morning Joe” Thursday, and said that it was “shocking” that Trump would consider turning him over to Russia for questioning.
