On the same day former Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced he is running for the Senate, a Democratic lawmaker jumped on the opportunity to raise money based on the news.
The 85-year-old Arpaio, a Republican, said Tuesday he is running for the seat that will soon be vacated by Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., A short time later, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., sent out an email to his supporters asking for campaign cash for him and for Arpaio's Democratic challenger, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.
"Like Roy Moore before him, Joe Arpaio is unfit to serve," Murphy said in the email, according to The Washington Times. "The president's pardon of his illegal behavior was a national disgrace. This is a man who became a hero to the alt-right because he racially targeted immigrants and placed them in what he himself referred to as a 'concentration camp.'"
Murphy added half of donations earned from the email would go to Sinema's campaign war chest.
"If we can win here, we will not only have kept a disreputable candidate out of the chamber, but we will take one giant leap forward toward replacing Mitch McConnell as the Senate Majority Leader," Murphy said.
Trump pardoned Arpaio last summer after the longtime law enforcement officer was convicted of contempt of court stemming from accusations he allowed his department to racially profile.
