Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Wednesday that he was concerned that a summit between President Donald Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un would not go well.
"I’m very worried that this summit is going to go very badly and then, surrounded by hawks like John Bolton and Mike Pompeo, the president is going to be convinced that diplomacy has failed and the only option left is military action," Murphy said Wednesday on MSNBC’s "Morning Joe."
Murphy was referring to a report that CIA director and secretary of state nominee Mike Pompeo had met with Kim Jong Un. Trump confirmed the meeting Wednesday, saying it went "very smoothly."
"I don’t know what the substance of the meetings were, but I’m glad that there was some preparatory work happening for this potential summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un," Murphy said.
The senator offered praise for the meeting between Pompeo and the North Korean leader..
"I think we should all admit that it’s good, not bad, that the Trump administration is trying to do some work ahead of this meeting, perhaps setting the stage for success rather than failure," Murphy said.
On Monday, Murphy signaled that he would be voting against confirming Pompeo as secretary of state. "America cannot afford a secretary of state with a unmistakable history of viewing (American) power through a military lens," Murphy tweeted.
