President Donald Trump's accomplishments "keep piling up" with the news that North Korea and South Korea appear to be heading toward a historic agreement on denuclearizing the peninsula and ending the countries' decades-long war, Rep. Chris Collins said Friday.
"It is historic, and when you think back 65 years, the number of presidents who have served and been frustrated endlessly ... to me this is another accomplishment, frankly, for President Trump," the New York Republican told Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria." "The accomplishments keep mounting, 14, 15 months into this administration."
Many of those accomplishments, such as moving the embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, have not gotten a great deal of attention, said Collins.
"To think we could have peace on the Korean peninsula, with no nuclear weapons whatsoever, that is beyond historic and certainly it's going to be tougher and tougher for these Democrats to continue, even though they're going to try, to paint Trump in the light that they have," said Collins.
"We have tax reform, we've got a historic Supreme Court, Jerusalem, and now North Korea. Imagine what he'll accomplish over four years."
Trump, Collins added, knows what it takes to get through a negotiation, and he doesn't bluff.
"There is actually a method to what he's doing and sure enough, Kim Jong Un took note," said Collins. "Kim Jong Un wants to wake up in the morning, and he said you know, with President Trump, if he continues down the nuclear path, there could be a day he doesn't wake up in the morning."
The move toward peace will also also help North Korea out of "dire, dire, dire straits," said Collins.
"The people there, their life expectancy, their health, this is a chance for Kim Jong Un to become a hero in his country, to get them moving forward economically and things we take for granted in the U.S., whether it's antibiotics or other health treatments that are not available in the North, our sanctions have worked," said Collins.
"I have a feeling that China right now, which is another issue for us, is looking at this and thinking uh oh, our influence in this area will be greatly diminished."
