GOP Candidate Knocked for His Catholic Faith

Mark Miloscia, a Republican running for state Senate in Washington state, has been attacked during his campaign for his Catholic faith.

On a website, markmiloscia.info, believed to be set up by a Democrat to attack him, Miloscia is shown in a mocked-up image wearing a papal crown, holding rosary beads, and a suitcase with the Confederate flag. The text with it says, "Republican Mark Miloscia comes from the Deep South … with plenty of baggage. 'Mississippi Mark' has always worn his church on his sleeve. Rather than represent the people of Federal Way, he has best represented the people of The Vatican," the Daily Caller reported.

Miloscia is a former Democratic legislator who converted to the GOP as a result of his beliefs on a number of social issues. He is against abortion, gay marriage, and the death penalty. He previously served as a lobbyist for the Washington State Catholic Conference of Bishops.

The controversial website post also included a list of five socially conservative positions and labeled him a "Lobbyist for the Catholic Church."

"It's unconscionable that that website is up," Miloscia told Caller. "People say to me, 'Didn't they do this against Kennedy?'"

Miloscia said religion can be a controversial issue in parts of Washington state, where people of faith are sometimes viewed with suspicion.

His rival, Democrat Shari Song, has denounced the image.

"There are lots of things in my opponent's record that are fair game to take issue with. But I respect Mark Miloscia's religion and I certainly don't condone ANY of my supporters making attacks on that basis," Song wrote in a Facebook post, according to The News Tribune.

"I understand one of my supporters may have crossed the line of what is appropriate in that regard, and I've asked them to stop. This campaign should be about the issues, not personal attacks."

Song's campaign manager told the Caller that a local Democratic Party member, Keith Tyler, is rumored to be behind the website.

"It's a very small town here and he's involved in the local Democratic Party just as a member. He's not a politician or a campaign worker," Alex Hendrickson told the Caller, adding that the campaign does not condone the image.
