Castro Catches Flak for Biden 'Cheap Shot' During Dem Debate

Julian Castro is catching heat for comments he made toward former Vice President Joe Biden during Thursday's Democrat presidential debate, with critics calling out his "cheap shot" at the 76-year-old Biden's memory.

Castro, who served as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Obama administration, was talking about healthcare with Biden on the stage in Houston and called for every American to have the ability to obtain free health insurance.

Biden responded by saying under his plan, people seeking government-run healthcare wouldn't have to pay a cent.

"They do not have to buy in," Biden said.

Castro, clearly fired up at the response, erupted.

"You just said that two minutes ago," Castro said. "You just said two minutes ago that they would have to buy in. You said they would have to buy in. Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago? Are you forgetting already what you said just two minutes ago?"

Biden appeared not to hear the remark, as he turned to his right and asked Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., what Castro said.

Biden fired back and said he was referring to someone who didn't have enough money to pay. "They're automatically enrolled," he said.

Some Biden critics have pointed out his age as he seeks the presidency, saying he could be too old.

Castro's remark was heavily criticized.

After the debate, ABC's Rahm Emanuel called it unnecessary.

"I think for Castro — he could have made the point, he had a legitimate point, but its a disqualifier the way he handled it," Emanuel said, as reported by Mediaite. "It will come across as mean and vindictive. That's not who he is."

An MSNBC panel discussing the exchange was also critical of how Castro handled it.

"I'm glad you scored it against Castro on the issue of attempting to blame the guy for having Alzheimer's," Chris Matthews said during a discussion. "I think that was a cheap shot. The fact is he got his facts wrong. In terms of competency, he was the one that risked his position tonight, not Biden."

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., added, "I think Castro's hurt. I think he was trying to swing for the fences … I'm not sure anything tonight moved the needle except I think Castro offended people the way he did that. And it won't surprise me if it helps Biden."

Other media organizations, including the New York Post, criticized Biden for his debate performance. "Biden babbles through Democrat debate," the newspaper wrote on its Friday morning cover.
