Former CNBC anchor Michelle Caruso-Cabrera has raised $1 million in her campaign to unseat freshman lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in New York’s 14th Congressional District in the June Democratic primary, reports the New York Post.
Ocasio-Cortez in 2018 defeated Rep. Joseph Crowley in a major upset, and then beat Republican candidate Anthony Pappas in the November general election.
She raised nearly $2 million over the final three months of 2019, one of the largest cash hauls among members of Congress, as her campaign received more than 325,000 contributions from more than 185,000 individual donors.
She’s expected to easily hold on to her seat despite nearly a dozen challengers.
Still, the Chamber of Commerce is planning to raise money for Caruso-Cabrera ahead of the primary, according to Politico.
“Michelle is one of the most qualified and competent candidates we have met with this cycle. Her communication skills on jobs and growth will create a clear contrast with AOC,” said Scott Reed, the senior political strategist at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “We plan on using our national network to get her the financial resources to win this race.”
Caruso-Cabrera told the Post she will unite the district, unlike Ocasio-Cortez.
“The national and local messages are clear: I will unite. AOC’s reign of division will end. This early financial and political support shows unstoppable momentum. As they say in New York, ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet.’ “
