President Donald Trump's condolences to the family of late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., 81, did not do enough to praise McCain as an American hero, according to Fox News analyst Brit Hume.
"Still not a kind word about McCain himself," Hume tweeted Saturday night.
President Trump, who once ridiculed McCain's historical status as a "war hero" because he was captured, tweeted condolences of "deepest sympathies and respect" to McCain's family, but did not praise McCain's service to the country, as so many have.
"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!" Trump tweeted.
Before his rebuke of Trump's family directed tweet, Hume tweeted about McCain's past displays of "guts."
"Many journalists remember Sen. McCain from his 'straight-talk-express' campaign for POTUS in 2000," Hume tweeted. "I prefer to recall his 'no surrender' tour that led to his nomination eight years later. He ran on the Iraq surge, and he was right. Took guts. He had guts."
