The father of a 14-year-old girl killed in the Feb. 14 mass shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of snubbing him during a break in the first day of Senate confirmation hearings.
Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jaime was among those gunned down in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School slayings, tweeted about the failed effort to shake hands with Kavanaugh.
“Just walked up to Judge Kavanaugh as morning session ended,” Guttenberg tweeted. “Put out my hand to introduce myself as Jaime Guttenberg's dad. He pulled his hand back, turned his back to me and walked away. I guess he did not want to deal with the reality of gun violence.”
But White House spokesman Raj Shah pushed back on Guttenberg’s claim, describing the interaction as “an unidentified individual” approaching the nominee, and being thwarted by security personnel.
“As Judge Kavanaugh left for his lunch break, an unidentified individual approached him,” Shah wrote in a tweeted response. “Before the judge was able to shake his hand, security had intervened.”
But Guttenberg tweeted back Shah was “incorrect.”
“I was here all day and introduced by [California Democratic] Senator [Dianne] Feinstein,” Guttenberg tweeted. “No security involved. He turned and walked away.”
Guttenberg has been a vocal advocate for gun control since the shooting, and days after the Parkland slaughter called out Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., on his record on guns.
