Former Indiana University basketball coach Bobby Knight, an early supporter of president-elect Donald Trump, told CNN on Thursday the Republican "got a little bit carried away" during the campaign but remains "perfect" for the White House.

Knight endorsed Trump in April, and campaigned with the billionaire in Indiana before the primary that put Trump at the front of the GOP pack.

"I think going back in time, say several months ago, I think he got a little bit carried away with this and that and other things, but then, as I saw him and worked with him over a period of time, I just saw him develop into a person that really understood what this was all about," Knight said. "And I had a great positive feeling for the direction in which he was headed."

He added Trump will quell his impulse to counterattack when provoked as president, and Trump has "straightened out" as time when on.

Trump recently engaged in a heated back-and-forth with Rep. John Lewis, R-Ga., after the civil rights leader called Trump's election illegitimate due to alleged Russian interference.

"When I traveled with Mr. Trump, I looked at it and I just saw, here's a guy who, that is tough, smart and he loves America," he said. "Beyond that, he has the faculties to do a lot of things, I believe, that have to be done insofar as our country is concerned."
