Rudy Giuliani would have been a better choice for secretary of state than President-elect Donald Trump's nominee Rex Tillerson, according to former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
In an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis aired Sunday on "The Cats Roundtable," Richardson, a Democratic political veteran, said Tillerson's ties with Russia complicate his role as the nation's top diplomat
"I would have picked Rudy Giuliani, because I know he’s supported overseas, people respect him,” Richardson said. "I know he’s got his rough edges, and I think in the campaign he went a little far. But the guy gets things done."
He lauded the former mayor's history in government while voicing concern about Tillerson's experience as CEO of Exxon Mobil Corp., and his ties to Russia President Vladimir Putin, which have come under fire.
"You know, oil diplomacy… is not the same as regular diplomacy," Richardson said. "And when you’re negotiating an oil deal, it’s a commercial decision; it’s what’s best for the ratepayers, for the Exxon shareholders, but not necessarily what’s best for the American people."
Richardson, who supported Hillary Clinton, said he hopes Trump does well, but warned he needs to have "stronger people" around him.
"I’m worried about his presidency, but I want him to do well," Richardson said. "I’m an American. I want the country to prosper. But I worry. I want him to surround himself with stronger people."
