New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who pointedly
refused to endorse Hillary Clinton for president last spring — and
skipped her campaign launch in June — is now ready to jump on the bandwagon.
The endorsement from the mayor, who managed Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign and served in former President Bill Clinton's administration, is likely to come before a Dec. 6 presidential forum in Iowa organized by de Blasio, the
Associated Press reports.
The news was first reported by
Politico New York.
The
New York Daily News notes the support comes too late for Clinton's newly formed leadership council in the state, which includes most top Democrats from around New York and every citywide elected official — except for de Blasio.
"He wasn't on the list because he doesn't support Hillary Clinton," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Monday, the Daily News reports. "You would have to talk to him about his political agenda," adding only a few "stragglers" weren't yet on board with Clinton's campaign.
In April, de Blasio claimed to want to know more about her vision for the White House before moving to endorse her. But the refusal triggered a famously furious headline in the
New York Post, blaring "Traitor."
