President Donald Trump's decision to bring former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani onto his legal team is a positive step for the country, former NYPD commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax TV.
Kerik discussed the move with host John Bachman on Friday's "Newsmax Now."
"He knows Bob Mueller, he's very fond of the president, and I think this is a great thing for the president and more so the country — and I think that's one of the reasons Rudy's doing this," Kerik said.
"I think what's happening in Washington with the president and all this chaos, I think it's damaging. I think what Rudy's trying to do is help put an end to it."
Mueller is leading the Department of Justice probe into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia. It's been reported that Trump is not currently a target of the investigation, but Mueller has indicted several people — including Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort — as part of it.
Giuliani joined Trump's legal team this week and said he would like to help bring an end to the investigation that has followed Trump since he took office.
Kerik pointed to Giuliani's qualifications as proof that he's a good candidate for the job.
"I think you have to look at Rudy's background and what he's accomplished throughout his career," Kerik said. "He's a problem-solver, a strategist, he's a phenomenal lawyer."
Kerik then listed some of the items on Giuliani's resume, which includes stints as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and the associate attorney general during the Reagan administration.
