Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said Wednesday that it was difficult to express the Republican Party's vision on trade policies.
"I don't know what the Republican Party is right now, in general," Sasse said during the Washington Examiner event "Examining Trade."
"Much more broadly, it's hard to articulate a clear Republican vision," Sasse said.
Sasse was answering a question about whether the GOP is still a party in favor of free trade, in part because of Donald Trump's administration being unclear in its goals for trade with China.
"Frankly, I've read lots of stories the last few days about the 'trade deal,' but I have yet to find any story that has substantive facts about this alleged deal," Sasse said at the event.
Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia also spoke at the event, saying some people inside the White House are "pushing back" against the administration's trade agenda.
