Sen. Ben Sasse sent a letter to the Trump administration Thursday asking it to investigate the reported "colossal mistake" of the previous president's actions regarding Hezbollah.

Sasse, R-Nebraska, was reacting to a Politico report that President Obama's administration thwarted its own federal criminal investigation into Hezbollah's billion-dollar drug trafficking operation because it was pursing the nuclear deal with Iran.

Hezbollah is an Iranian-backed terrorist organization.

Sasse wants answers.

"If the Obama administration failed to use the authorities that Congress has authorized to stop Hezbollah terrorists and their associates from pouring cocaine onto our streets to fund terrorism and acquire weapons of mass destruction, it was a colossal mistake," Sasse wrote the Departments of Justice, Treasury and State.

"If the administration did so in order to shore up its foolish nuclear deal with Iran, it was a mistake of historical proportions," Sasse wrote to Jeff Sessions, Steve Mnuchin and Rex Tillerson.

Sasse is seeking answers to 10 questions as to whether the "Obama administration engaged in a 'systematic' effort to 'defang, defund and undermine'" the disruption of Hezbollah's massive criminal enterprise, he wrote.
