There is no evidence that FBI agent Peter Strzok's personal views affected his professional responsibilities, Sen. Ben Cardin commented Friday about the fiery exchanges made during a Capitol Hill hearing on Thursday.
"This was clearly a show put on by the Republicans," the Maryland Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "Mr. Strzok has certain views. He was very open about that, and the question is not about his personal political views, it's [about] how it affected his responsibilities as an FBI agent.
Instead, said Cardin, he believes the hearing was held to distract the public and to raise questions once again about special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
"They're trying to discredit the investigation rather than dealing with any substance," said Cardin."We all bring our own views and biases into our work. That's normal. If it interviews with our judgment, that is a different matter, but there is no evidence that he did anything to compromise the investigation itself."
Cardin on Friday also said he wrote a letter to President Donald Trump to warn him before his planned meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I issued a report that outlined all of the ways has used weapons against democracies," said Cardin. "He is trying to compromise our system of government, the way that he interfered in Europe."
