A Republican member of the House said Wednesday that Pontius Pilate gave more rights to Jesus Christ than Democrats have given to President Donald Trump during their impeachment effort.
Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., said on the House floor during debate on the two articles of impeachment, "Not only have the Democrats prohibited Republicans and the president from questioning the so-called whistleblower, his identity has been kept secret."
He added, "When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president in this process.
"I yield back."
The House spent several hours debating Wednesday whether to impeach Trump ahead of a vote that was expected Wednesday evening.
If Trump is impeached, he will be tried in the Senate on whether to be removed from office.
