White House chief strategist Steve Bannon addressed the lack of on-camera White House press briefings in recent weeks by taking a direct shot at spokesman Sean Spicer.
"Sean got fatter," Bannon told The Atlantic via text message when asked why there have been more briefings off camera.
Bannon reportedly did not respond to a follow-up.
Spicer has served as President Donald Trump's press secretary since Inauguration Day, but his tenure behind the mic has been riddled with insults from some in the media and rumors that his job may be in jeopardy.
Reports this week suggested Trump is considering promoting Spicer to communications chief, which would be equivalent to a deputy chief of staff position. There was no official word from the White House on those reports or who would replace Spicer at press briefings.
