Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told CNN on Thursday that the state's Republican Party has gone "off the rails," as seen by the placement of unauthorized ballot collection boxes in various locations.

"It's a stupid thing that they're doing right now with those ballot boxes," the former Republican governor told Don Lemon on "CNN Tonight," referring to the California GOP. "I think it's just Mickey Mouse stuff that, you know, has serious kind of effects."

He added, "what they should do, really, is offer people hope and make everyone participate and make everyone be able to vote and those kind of things rather than make those fake ballot boxes."

Schwarzenegger went on to refer to the Republican Party as a "sinking ship" because of its lack of focus on healthcare and education.

State election officials earlier this week issued a cease-and-desist letter to the California GOP asking them to remove any ballot boxes that were falsely labeled "official," but a spokesperson for the party insisted that the boxes were legal.
