The Justice Department inspector general report showed that no examples of anti-Donald Trump bias affected the outcome of its probe into Hillary Clinton, The New York Times’ editorial board wrote Friday.
"As political bombshells go, this one proved to be something of a dud," the board wrote about inspector general Michael Horowitz’s report.
The Times said that some of the findings in the report showed that the FBI did "breathtakingly stupid" things.
The board wrote that signs of bias among FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page were not a "secret plot" to take down Trump.
"Horowitz’s report also confirms that mouthing off by a handful of officials did not add up to a secret plot against Mr. Trump," the board wrote.
"President Trump in particular had been itching to brandish the findings as proof of a sprawling ‘deep state’ plot to bring him down—a plot that, as best anyone can tell, exists wholly within the fever swamp of the president’s imagination,” the board wrote.
The Times board praised the work of the inspector general, but said it would not matter to Trump and his supporters. "Twitter became a sea of dark conspiracy theories," about the "deep state," the board wrote.
"This should surprise nobody," the board wrote.
