Joe Biden has picked Dr. Anthony Fauci to be his chief medical adviser on COVID-19 and announced other key members of his health team on Monday, Fox News reports.

Fauci would also continue his role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in a Biden administration, the former vice president said.

A prominent member of President Donald Trump's White House Coronavirus Task Force, Fauci confirmed Friday that he "said yes right on the spot" when Biden asked him about filling the position.

Biden had stated even prior to the election that he would like Fauci to remain in his role if he becomes president. Trump, on the other hand, has often clashed with the infectious disease expert over COVID-19 precautions and lockdowns in the past and even hinted at firing him after the election.

Other picks Biden has announced for his health team include:

  • California Attorney General Xavier Becerra for health and human services secretary.
  • Dr. Vivek Murthy as surgeon general, the position he held during the Obama administration.
  • Dr. Rochelle Walensky, chief of infectious diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, for director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Jeff Zients, a former official in the Obama administration, for coordinator of the COVID-19 response and counselor to the president.
  • Yale School of Medicine professor Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith as chair of the COVID-19 Equity Task Force.
  • Natalie Quillian, the former vice president's deputy campaign manager, for deputy coordinator of the COVID-19 response.
