A Democratic lawmaker who helped guide Anita Hill through a 1991 Senate hearing for then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas is urging the accuser of current justice candidate Brett Kavanaugh to attend a Monday hearing, asserting “she can’t lose.”
In remarks on CNN, Eleanor Holmes Norton, a non-voting delegate in the House for the District of Columbia, said Christine Blasey Ford, a California psychology professor who alleges she was pinned against her will and groped by Kavanaugh at a party in the early 1980s, has everything to gain by testifying before the Senate panel.
“I would say to her that in the name of Anita Hill, please in fact appear,” Holmes Norton said. “Know that the Democrats are going to be there to protect you … You can do it, please come. Don't give [the Judiciary Committee] the issue with you saying, ‘see, she didn't show, she wasn't credible and that is why she didn't show up.’”
Holmes Norton said Hill “became a victim” during the contentious Thomas hearing, yet “the only reason we’re having [Monday’s] hearing in the first place is because of the Anita Hill debacle.”
“Our side is going to have to ask [Ford] the harder questions so that it is clear what happened to her,” Holmes Norton said. “The last thing that my Republican colleagues are going to do is bring out her side of the issue. … And they will then be on the defensive.”
“Which is why I hope that she will come,” she added. “I don't think that she can lose.”
