Angus King on Mnuchin: Trump Bringing 'New Alligator,' Not Draining Swamp

President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin is "an odd way of draining the swamp to bring in a new alligator from Wall Street," Maine Sen. Angus King said Thursday.

King, an independent, told CNN's "New Day" program he would prefer a Treasury secretary that has experience "on Main Street, with ordinary Americans" and that his criticism was nonpartisan, since he also critiqued President Barack Obama's ties to Wall Street.

Mnuchin is a former partner in the Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs and was Trump's national finance chairman during his campaign.

Experience in the financial industry is necessary, but King said he is not drawing conclusions about Mnuchin until the Senate's confirmation hearings for Trump's Cabinet picks.

"I'm going to wait until the hearings and see what the testimony is and what the background is," King said.

When asked about Secretary of Commerce nominee Wilbur Ross, King said that job often goes to a "someone of wealth and experience" and the Treasury secretary job is different than Commerce "because of their influence over economic policy."

Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., rebuked Mnuchin in a joint statement, according to Business Insider, calling the choice "the worst of hypocrisy," since Trump had mentioned during his campaign that he would battle against Wall Street.
