Sen. Angus King, I-Vt., said he was "reasonably confident" that Russia is behind a campaign of disinformation that Facebook uncovered.
"I’m reasonably confident. I don’t think anybody knows for sure," King said Wednesday on CNN’s "New Day."
"They’re back. We’re pretty confident of that," King said, referring to Russia returning to efforts at disinformation after the 2016 presidential election.
King added that the Russians’ strategy was more sophisticated than in 2016.
Facebook said it had uncovered "sophisticated" efforts to influence U.S. politics on its platforms, and the efforts were possibly linked to Russia.
Kirstjen Nielsen, the chief of the Department of Homeland Security, commended Facebook for removing 32 fake accounts that it uncovered.
King said in the "New Day" interview that he believed Nielsen’s comments meant that the administration was becoming more serious cybersecurity issues.
"That was, I hope, a turning point in terms of the attention to this being paid by the administration because it’s been pretty much radio silence, as you know, since the election," King said.
