Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is taking on the National Rifle Association so he can earn “street cred” with progressive voters before the election for governor, according to a strategist.
“I have two words when it comes to this issue with Andrew Cuomo: Cynthia Nixon,” said Democratic strategist Capri Cafaro on Hill.TV.
Nixon is Cuomo’s opponent in the Democratic primary and identifies as a Democratic socialist.
“He’s being challenged from the left in a primary, the democratic socialists… are gaining traction, and I think that he wants to increase his street cred with the more progressive wing of the party, and I think that’s what all this is about,” Cafaro said.
Cuomo on Monday defended actions against the NRA’s Carry Guard insurance program that provides funds for people to defend themselves if they are charged with firing their weapons in self-defense.
